Science of Skin

Beautiful Skin Starts Here.

At Estée Lauder, we believe every woman is born with beautiful skin. Our scientists know that cellular damage is a root cause of most visible signs of aging. So it is essential to help skin prevent and repair the look of this damage before it becomes permanent.

Our targeted, high-performance Repair Serum and Moisturizer formulas work together to deliver maximum benefits and results you can see. They are tested and proven to deliver significant anti-aging results. Repair Serum + Moisturizer = Beautiful Skin

Advanced innovations, today.

Throughout our history, we have remained at the forefront of science and research. We have studied women's skin to gain a deep understanding of exactly how and why skin ages. This research has led to our industry-leading expertise and innovation in skincare technology.

Estée Lauder employs and works with some of the world's top skin scientists and performs evaluations around the globe. We rigorously test and prove that our products deliver exceptional results.

The Science of Nighttime Skin Repair

During the day, skin goes into natural protection mode to protect itself against environmental assaults–a primary cause of visible aging.

Then at night, while you sleep, your skin goes through dramatic changes to repair the day's damage.

Synchronization is a natural process that helps ensure this natural defense and repair happens at exactly the right time. But as we age, skin cells can become desynchronized, contributing to premature signs of aging.

Purification is a newly discovered, natural process in skin that peaks at night. It helps skin cells remove internal debris that can accelerate premature signs of aging. But like synchronization, this natural repair process declines with age, leading to the appearance of aging.

Optimization of skin's natural processes, including synchronization and purification, help counter the look of premature aging.

Ensuring that skin's nighttime renewing processes are maximized and are occurring at the optimal time is critical.

Nighttime is the right time to maximize skin's natural renewal.

Lines and Wrinkles Explained

Collagen and elastin are two of skin's most vital proteins. Along with other molecular building blocks, a network of collagen and elastin creates the support structure that keeps skin firm and flexible.

As we age, skin's natural collagen and elastin production declines. Environmental assaults like sun damage take their toll on these proteins. Loss of energy and lack of nutrients add to the decline. Soon the once-firm support structure slackens–and lines and wrinkles start to appear.

Other factors can also impact the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Repeated muscle movements can weaken the collagen network, just as repeatedly folding a piece of paper weakens it along the fold. And dehydration can emphasize the lines that you see.

Collagen and elastin are vital to keep skin looking less lined and younger.

Dry, Dehydrated Skin

Feeling parched? Craving moisture? Dry and dehydrated skin can be caused by a variety of factors, both internal and external. But regardless of what causes it, our research shows that dry skin can lead to premature signs of aging.

Skin may become temporarily dehydrated due to environmental factors, such as low humidity, air-conditioning, prolonged sun exposure, and even some skincare products like too-harsh cleansers.

Beyond dehydration, some women have inherently dry skin, often caused by a damaged moisture barrier. This is a special layer of lipids in healthy skin that keeps moisture locked into skin, and keeps irritants out. But due to genetics, stress, changing hormones or just the passing of time, the moisture barrier can become weakened. Moisture slips out, irritants creep in–and over time they weaken the barrier even further.

Estée Lauder knows that when skin lacks hydration–or can't maintain ideal moisture levels due to a leaky barrier–it may struggle to carry out its everyday youth-keeping functions. Skin cells may literally shrivel up, causing fine, dry lines to appear. Skin's protein structure, and the cellular functions that support it, can weaken. Irritants penetrate faster and deeper, causing more damage to your appearance.

Day-and-night hydration and effective barrier repair are among the most important steps you can take to keep your skin looking younger and healthier, now and in the future.

When Skin Needs a Lift

As we age, our skin starts to feel less firm, and may look like it is sagging. This can be caused by a lack of collagen and elastin. These vital skin proteins (along with other molecular building blocks), form an intricate network–the support structure that keeps skin firm and flexible.

But as we age, skin's natural collagen and elastin production declines, resulting in a weaker, less flexible or even damaged network. And without its internal support, skin begins to lose its firm appearance.

What can you do? Though aging is unavoidable, its appearance can be minimized. Scientists continue to find new and better ways to support skin's natural collagen and elastin production–with advanced technologies, targeted nutrients and powerful boosters.

As we age, skin's internal support network begins to weaken.

Why Aging Starts With Eyes

When your eyes look beautiful, so do you–yet women around the world tell us they first noticed signs of aging around their eyes. And that's no surprise: the skin around your eyes is extremely thin and delicate. In fact, it can be up to 40% thinner than anywhere else on your face.

Because it is so thin, eye-area skin is more vulnerable to all of the factors that cause visible aging. Dehydration. Sun, pollution and other environmental damage. Loss of collagen and elastin. Constant movement: creasing and uncreasing as we blink, squint and smile. Even lifestyle factors like emotional stress and lack of sleep. Eventually these factors overwhelm the fragile skin, and signs of aging begin to appear.

Unfortunately, the eye area is also where signs of aging are most exaggerated. Lines are more noticeable. Discolorations–including dark circles–are more apparent. Loss of firmness, puffiness and crepiness or uneven texture are all especially emphasized around your eyes.

Estée Lauder was among the first to recognize the special needs of the eye area. Formulas for eyes must be extra gentle and hydrating, with specially selected ingredients to address eye area concerns.
